Hedwignites 2006
Annual Benefit Gala
March 31, 2006
Primitive
130 N. Jefferson, Chicago
A wonderful evening was had by all at Hedwig Dances' annual Benefit Gala.
This year, the event was held at Chicago's premiere new gallery, Primitive.
Several merchants graciously donated items to our silent auction...see who they are.
Sleep of Reason: GoyaDances takes its inspiration from Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos, a series of 80 etchings
portraying a witty, fantastic and dark world that exposes the human psyche. The centerpiece of Hedwig’s 20th
anniversary, “Sleep of Reason” explores universal subjects of power and morality.  Choreographer Jan Bartoszek
works with several of Goya’s dramatically suggestive settings to explore the symbolism that characterizes his
drawings. The result is an otherworldly scenario, a dancing tour of Goya’s characters and their interactions.  Masks
designed by Blair Thomas, puppet innovator and co-founder of Redmoon Theater, enhance Sleep of Reason’s visual
appeal.  Tatjana Radisic (costumes), David “Big” Krause (set) and Paul Park (projections) round out the outstanding
design team.  The program also includes an excerpt from Bartoszek’s work-in-progress, “Short Stories.”  This new
work, which will premiere in full this coming June, probes the fleeting, transient layers of memory and floats on a score
of country music and ambient sound designed by Richard Woodbury.  Rounding out the program is a remounting of
Bartoszek’s 1991 work, “Fever Tales,” a dreamy dance fantasy performed by a trio of women that addresses illness,
caretaking and the fragility of health.  Composer Michael Zerang created an original score for “Fever Tales.”
