When did you begin making dances ?
I'm not sure when I began but I started performing my dances in high school. I was able to replace our
required sports credit with a choreography credit I invented, performing small group pieces and solos in
the school's regular assemblies..it was terrifying.
What do you consider to be your strongest influences as a choreographer?
[I'm] not sure I can answer this question yet.
What is your dance training?
Humphrey/Weidman technique with Ernestine Stodelle and Gail Corbin in Wallingford, Connecticut, The
Juilliard School, my Spanish mother, my tango dancing father, good movies and beautiful music.
What is your long-term vision?
To continue to create dances with my company; to create a home for Gallim [Dance] to dance in and
share our work with our community; and, to direct a feature film.
What are your plans for the upcoming year?
This year I have a few commissions coming up after working with Hedwig. In the fall I will be
choreographing a work for The Juilliard School freshman class as part of the New Dances Series. In the
winter I will begin my position as one of the associate choreographers at Noord Netherlands Dans in
Holland and in the spring I will be choreographing a work for Ballet Bern in Switzerland. Gallim Dance will
have it's debut at The Joyce Theater in New York, August 9-14. It's a very exciting year!
How does teaching figure into your work as a choreographer?
I find a lot of opportunity to learn about movement invention through teaching. It a chance to research
the body. The work we do in class informs my dancers about the ways they can approach my movement,
it gives them an opportunity to experiment with my ideas on their own time and bodies. I use class time
to introduce ideas about movement that might later take shape in my choreography.
